The Challenge

When The Pet Club came to Tobler Haus Digital Studio, they were taking bookings through a single online form. It worked, but it came at a cost to their most loyal customers. Every time someone booked a stay, they had to re-enter everything from scratch: owner details, emergency contacts, medications, and complete information for each pet. For repeat customers, booking had become a chore.

The Solution

Rita reached out to us looking for a better way, and we built a bespoke booking dashboard for The Pet Club and its clients. Customers now create an account, enter their information once, and add each of their pets to their profile. Once a pet is saved, it never has to be entered again. When details change, such as a new medication or updated vet information, customers simply edit that pet’s profile.

Booking itself became a short, simple form: choose which pets are staying and select the dates. That’s it.

The Results

By removing the repetitive data entry, we turned a high-friction process into a quick, easy experience. The new dashboard improved customer satisfaction and helped The Pet Club retain its repeat clients, while giving Rita’s team cleaner, more consistent information for every stay.

Wondering how to force PDFs to download rather than load in another tab (as Chrome currently does)? While there are other proposed solutions —some involved adding code to your .htaccess file — there is a very elegant solution using the HTML5 anchor element download.

How it works:

The download attribute tells compliant browsers to download the anchor link using the specified download attribute name.

HTML Example:

Instead of

<a href="https://yoursite.com/yourPDFfile.pdf">Download this PDF</a>

Use the download attribute:

<a href="https://yoursite.com/yourPDFfile.pdf" download="My Awesome PDF.pdf">Download this PDF</a>

The above HTML code will tell the browser to download the linked PDF file using the download attribute value as the name. Without the download attribute, some browsers (notably Chrome) will load PDFs in another tab.

One question we get asked a lot is: “How do I add my new email to my computer?” If you have your email setup with us on our server, it is very useful to be able to use an email client to read and respond to your emails without having to open up your browser.

First of all, by far the easiest way to setup your email on an email client is to use an automatic setup script (this only works for Apple mail, Windows Live mail, and Outlook). Go to webmail.yourdomain.com, type in your email and password, and you will see automatic scripts. Select the one based on desired email client, and run it. That is all there is to it.

However, if your email client isn’t supported, you will need to configure it manually. Here is how you will add your email on most desktop clients:

First of all, we set you up with a temporary password that you should change before continuing. You can do this by logging into your email online (go to webmail.yourdomain.com, and enter your email address and password), clicking your email at the top and clicking on “Passwords and Security”.

Choose an email client. The most common choices are Apple Mail, Outlook, or Mozilla Thunderbird.

Once you open your client of choice, click “Open Account”. You can typically find this button in the menu or by pressing a + button somewhere near the top of the window.

If the client offers to make you a new email, select skip/use my existing email.

You will then be asked for your name, email address and password.

You will be asked whether you want to manually configure connection settings, or set it up automatically. You will choose manual.

Under Manual Config, enter these settings:

Incoming Server: imap.omnicreative.com

Outgoing Server: smtp.omnicreative.com

Username: your full email address

Password: your email password

Incoming Port: IMAP 993 (non-SSL: IMAP 143)

Outgoing Port: 465 (non-SSL: 587)

SMTP Authentication Required

Secure Authentication or SPA needs to be turned off

Once these steps are completed, click Connect, and it should work! Your email should be hooked up, and the client will begin downloading your emails. (Note: This guide is only for IMAP accounts, as that is the only type we create. If you have an existing POP account, you will need to change the incoming port to POP 110 for non-SSL, and POP 995 for SSL.)

Congratulations! You setup your email account on your computer!

What is the best event calendar plugin for organizing events in WordPress?

This is perhaps the most important aspect of certain event-related websites, such as sites for bands and authors on book tours, and even for smaller service-related businesses that schedule their services online. Using an event calendar plugin can save you loads of time, and also create a more user friendly experience.

We believe we have found one of the best event calendar plugin for WordPress, and it is called (drum roll please)… “The Events Calendar“! Yes, that is truly the name, so it should be quite easy to remember. It was developed by Modern Tribe (you can find them at tri.be, my favorite domain so far), and they offer both a free and premium version for their plugin. The free version has a lot of functionality, but if you would like to add recurring events or further customize your event calendar, the premium version has you covered. The link above goes directly to their page on the WordPress directory, from which you can directly download the plugin. I also recorded a tutorial on how to use it.

What do you think about The Events Calendar? Do you have another plugin you think is better? Let us know in the comments.

Today while I was working on Christian Concealed Carry, I ran into an error uploading images in WordPress and grey thumbnails in Media Library. Apparently I wasn’t the first to discover this irritating bug.

Symptom: Image uploads appear to fail resulting in grey thumbnails in Media Library

The issue began with WordPress appearing to fail uploading images. I selected the images, chose Upload and the upload progress bar would “progress” fully, but then simply stall. This resulted in an error message displayed for each image I attempted to upload. Then, the image would show up in Media Library but as a generic grey thumbnail icon.

Media Library upload error message

Media Library grey thumbnails

Troubleshooting: Eliminating possible causes

At first, I assumed it was a network or server related glitch, especially since I was accessing the internet this day using Exede Satellite Internet and it was snowing pretty heavily. But the more troubleshooting I did, I soon realized my internet connection was fine, and the server was performing as expected.

I then Googled the issue and found a solution that worked for me.

Solution: Steps needed to repair thumbnails and reset Media Library

It appears the issue has something to do with WordPress uploading the image but having trouble generating thumbnails.

The solution is to install the Force Regenerate Thumbnails WordPress plugin, activate it, and apply it.

Now, you have two options when using the Force Regenerate Thumbnails plugin.

Force Regenerate ALL images in Media Library

Regenerate only a few images in Media Library that are displaying the generic grey thumbnail. (I chose this option and it worked!)

To Force Regenerate ALL thumbnails, go to your WordPress Dashboard > Tools > Force Regenerate Thumbnails.

Force Regenerate Thumbnails dashboard location

However, to only regenerate select thumbnails, you will need to go the Media Library and select the image(s) you wish to regenerate. The easiest way to do this is to choose the List View selector in the upper-left corner of Media Library:

Media Library “list view” button

Let us know how it works for you

I hope this works for you, as it did for me. Using Force Regenerate Thumbnails appears to reset the image uploading process.

Throw out your keyboard and HD LCD monitor! Industry experts claimed the keyboard and desktop computer would be dead within a few years. But in a daring move, Adobe has announced it’s bypassing the tablet and desktop market to exclusively offer the Adobe Creative Suite on iPhones and mobile devices.

For the pixel OCD types out their (like me!) having a powerful suite of creative tools on these über small handheld devices surely promises much more control over precisely placed elements, pixel alignment, and color management. Think of it! Now we can swipe and pinch away our day designing complex websites, exhaustive multi-page catalogs, and performing dazzling acrobatic feats of Photoshop wizardry on our pocket-sizes screens. I thought this day couldn’t come fast enough.

Additionally, this revolutionary move to enable handheld creative prowess is said to greatly improve the designer’s eyesight and vision strain. Adobe is pushing for smaller mobile screens in the coming years for greater productivity.

Oh, did I forget to mention that the mobile creative suite will only be available for download from Adobe on 4/1/2015?
